What carpet stretching fixes
Carpet loosens as it ages. Foot traffic, humidity swings, heavy furniture, and dragging appliances all pull carpet away from the tack strip, and once it is loose it never tightens back on its own.
Stretching corrects the common problems:
Wrinkles and ripples running across the room
Buckles and waves that catch the light
Loose carpet that shifts underfoot
Trip hazards from raised ridges, especially in hallways and on landings
Carpet that pulled away from a wall or a doorway
Bunching after furniture was moved or a room was rearranged
Left alone, a ripple keeps getting walked on, and the crease wears through faster than the rest of the carpet. Stretching early protects the carpet you already have.
How we re-stretch your carpet
A knee-kicker alone cannot pull a carpet properly tight, which is why do-it-yourself fixes tend to wrinkle again. We use a power stretcher that spans the room and pulls the carpet evenly across its full width.
Here is how a typical re-stretch runs:
Assessment. We check where the carpet has come loose, look at the tack strip and seams, and confirm the carpet is in good enough shape to stretch. You get a written quote.
Power-stretching. We lift the affected edge, stretch the carpet tight across the room with a power stretcher, and hook it back onto the tack strip.
Re-trim the excess. Stretching pulls extra carpet toward the walls. We trim the excess so the edge tucks in cleanly.
Re-tack and re-secure. We re-tack the edges, re-secure transitions and thresholds, and check that seams sit flat.
Tidy up. We vacuum the area and leave the room ready to use.
We can work around furniture rather than emptying the room, shifting pieces as we move through the space instead of asking you to clear everything out first.
Carpet repairs we also do
Stretching is often paired with a repair. We handle the fixes that keep a carpet in service instead of sending it to landfill.
Seam repair. Failed or lifting seams re-joined and heat-sealed so they lie flat.
Patching. Burns, stains, and damaged patches cut out and replaced with a remnant or a piece taken from a closet, so the repair blends in.
Pet-damage repair. Chewed edges, dug corners, and snagged loops patched or re-secured.
Transitions and thresholds. Carpet re-secured at doorways and where it meets tile, hardwood, or laminate flooring.
Re-stretch after a move. Carpet pulled loose by movers or a furniture swap put back tight.
If a section is beyond repair, we will say so rather than patch something that will not hold.
Stretching vs replacing
Not every loose or worn carpet is worth saving, and we will give you an honest read at the assessment.
Stretching makes sense when the carpet is still in good condition, the fibre has plenty of life left, and the problem is looseness rather than wear. It is a fraction of the cost of new carpet and can be done in a single visit.
Replacement makes more sense when the carpet is worn through, matted flat, badly stained across large areas, or simply near the end of its life. In that case, a re-stretch only buys a little time. If you are leaning toward new carpet, see our carpet installation page and our carpet installation cost guide to compare.

Frequently asked questions
Is it worth restretching carpet?
If the carpet is otherwise in good shape, yes. Re-stretching costs far less than replacement and removes trip hazards while extending the life of the carpet you already have. If the carpet is worn out, replacement is the better spend, and we will tell you which applies.
Can carpet be restretched without moving the furniture?
Usually. We can work around furniture, shifting pieces as we go rather than asking you to empty the room first. Heavier or more crowded rooms may need some clearing, and we will let you know at the assessment.
Can carpet be too old to stretch?
It can. Older carpet with a dry, brittle backing or badly worn fibre may not hold a stretch and can tear during the pull. We check the backing and condition before stretching, and if it will not take, we will recommend replacement instead.
Can I stretch the carpet myself?
A knee-kicker can nudge a small area, but it cannot pull a room evenly tight, so wrinkles tend to return. A power stretcher and re-trimming the excess are what make the fix last, which is why most homeowners have it done properly once rather than repeatedly. Ready to flatten that carpet?
