Your stair options
Stairs are personal. The right choice depends on your subfloor, the look you want, and how much traffic the staircase sees.
Fully carpeted stairs. Wall-to-wall carpet across the whole tread and riser. The softest, quietest, and most slip-resistant option, and a common pick for families.
Stair runners over wood. A carpet runner down the centre with finished wood showing on each side. A classic look that adds grip while keeping your hardwood visible.
Hardwood and oak stair installation. New hardwood treads and risers, or oak stairs to match your floors. A durable, clean finish that suits an open staircase.
Stair refacing. Capping worn or builder-grade stairs with new treads and risers to refresh the staircase without a full rebuild.
Not sure which suits your home? We bring options to the measure so you can compare underfoot in your own light.
Installation styles: waterfall vs cap-and-band
How the carpet wraps each step changes the look and the feel.
Waterfall. The carpet runs straight over the nose of each step and drops to the next tread. It is clean, quick, and a good match for straight staircases.
Cap-and-band (French cap). The carpet is wrapped and tucked around the contour of each step, following the nose and riser. It is a more tailored, upholstered look and takes more labour.
We will walk you through both at the quote and recommend the style that fits your stairs and budget.
Safety, grip, and secure fastening
Loose stair carpet is a trip hazard, so fastening matters more here than anywhere else in the home. We secure each tread and riser tight to the step, fix the runner firmly at every point, and finish the edges cleanly. A proper stair install grips underfoot and stays put – no shifting, no lifting at the nose. Good underpad on the treads adds cushioning and quiet without loosening the hold.
Runner materials and finishes
For runners and carpeted stairs we fit hard-wearing fibres built for traffic.
Nylon for durability on busy staircases.
Wool and wool-blend for a premium feel and long wear.
Patterned and textured styles that hide everyday wear and add character.
Bound or serged edges on runners for a finished border down each side.
We match the fibre and pad to how much the staircase gets used, so a busy front hall staircase gets a firmer, tougher build than a quiet basement run.
Matching stairs to your adjacent flooring
Stairs rarely stand alone – they connect two floors, so they should tie into what is around them. If your upstairs is carpeted, we can carry the same carpet down the stairs for a seamless look. If you have hardwood on the main level, a wood or oak staircase can be matched or stained to blend in, or a runner can bridge a carpeted upper floor and a hardwood main floor. We install and coordinate both carpet and hardwood, so the transition is planned, not patched. See our carpet installation and hardwood floor installation pages for the flooring on either end.

Frequently asked questions
Can you install a runner over my existing hardwood stairs?
Yes. We fit runners over finished wood stairs and secure them for grip while leaving the wood on each side exposed.
Waterfall or cap-and-band – which should I choose?
Waterfall is cleaner and more economical and suits straight stairs. Cap-and-band gives a tailored, upholstered look for more money. We help you decide at the measure.
Do you install hardwood stairs, not just carpet?
Yes. We install hardwood and oak treads and risers, and we can match them to your existing floors.
Can you refinish or reface tired stairs?
Yes. Stair refacing caps worn steps with new treads and risers, and we can coordinate refinishing so the staircase matches your floors. Ready to redo your stairs? Book a free in-home measure and written quote today.
