Our solid hardwood installation process

Solid hardwood moves with the seasons, so the prep matters as much as the fastening. We follow a set sequence to keep the floor flat, tight, and quiet.

  1. Acclimation. We let the wood sit in your home so its moisture content settles to match the room before installation.
  2. Subfloor moisture check. We test the subfloor and flag any moisture issue before it becomes a gap or a cup later.
  3. Subfloor prep. We make sure the subfloor is clean, dry, and flat, and address squeaks and high spots.
  4. Nail or staple down. Solid boards are fastened to the subfloor with the correct nailer or stapler for a secure, low-movement floor.
  5. Sanding and finishing (site-finished only). If your floor is site-finished, we sand and apply the finish after install. Prefinished floors skip this step.

We also fit transitions, thresholds, and shoe moulding so the edges look finished, not raw.

Species and finishes

The species sets the look, the hardness, and the grain. We install the common Canadian choices and can talk through what suits your rooms and traffic.

  • Oak – red or white, the standard for a reason. Takes stain well and hides wear.
  • Maple – lighter, smoother grain, clean and modern.
  • Hickory – hard and characterful, with strong grain variation.
  • Walnut – darker and softer underfoot, rich in living and dining spaces.

You also choose how the floor is finished:

  • Prefinished – the boards arrive sanded and coated. Faster install, no on-site dust, ready to walk on sooner.
  • Site-finished – installed raw, then sanded and finished in place. More control over sheen and stain, and a fully seamless surface.

Not sure which way to go? We will lay out the trade-offs during your measure.

Board and plank repairs and colour matching

Not every job is a full replacement. If you have a hardwood floor with a damaged section, we can replace individual boards and blend them into the surrounding wood.

Colour matching an existing floor is part of the work – we match species, width, and finish as closely as the original allows. Where an exact match is not possible, hardwood floor refinishing across the whole area often gives a more even result than patching alone. We will tell you honestly which route makes sense for your floor.

Supply-and-install, or install your own material

You have two ways to work with us.

  • Supply-and-install. We source the hardwood and install it, all on one quote.
  • Install your own material. Already bought your boards, or have some on order? We will install material you supply.

Either way, the measure, subfloor prep, and careful installation are the same, and everything is spelled out in a clear written quote.

Hardwood, engineered, or refinishing?

Solid hardwood is not always the right call, and we will say so. In basements or over concrete, engineered hardwood installation handles moisture and humidity better than solid wood. If your existing hardwood is structurally sound but tired, hardwood floor refinishing restores it for less than a full replacement. And if you are weighing several rooms and surfaces at once, start from our flooring installation overview to see everything we install.

Areas we serve in Mississauga

We install hardwood floors throughout Mississauga, including Port Credit, Lorne Park, Mineola, Clarkson, Streetsville, Erin Mills, Central Erin Mills, Churchill Meadows, Meadowvale, Cooksville, Applewood, and the City Centre and Square One area. If your neighbourhood is not listed, mention it when you request an estimate.

Frequently asked questions

How long does hardwood installation take?

It depends on the square footage and whether the floor is site-finished. Prefinished installs are quicker; site-finished floors add sanding and drying time. You get a timeline with your written quote.

Do I need to acclimate the wood first?

Yes. We acclimate solid hardwood in your home before installation so it settles to your indoor conditions. This reduces gapping and cupping later.

Can you install hardwood over concrete or in a basement?

Solid hardwood is not ideal below grade. For those spaces we usually recommend engineered hardwood, which is more stable against moisture and humidity.

Do you remove and dispose of the old floor?

Yes. Old flooring removal and disposal is available, and furniture moving can be included. We will add both to your quote so the price is clear.
